Many visitors come to Britain for castles, historic cities and afternoon tea. Yet one of my favourite seasonal experiences is far simpler: spending a day wandering through beautifully designed gardens filled with colour, fragrance and creative ideas.

The UK has a long gardening tradition, and flower shows are part of that culture. Some are grand international events attracting designers from around the world. Others feel more relaxed, combining riverside walks, local food and beautiful planting.

Over the years I’ve visited several of these shows, including Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Garden Festival and RHS Wisley. Each offers something different.

If you’re planning a spring or summer visit to London, these are the flower shows and garden festivals most worth adding to your itinerary.

How to get there?

The Chelsea Flower Show takes place in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London SW3 4SR—just a short hop from central London.

By Tube (London Underground) – Sloane Square (District & Circle lines) is the nearest station, about a 10-minute walk to the showground. Follow the well-marked signs or friendly event stewards guiding the way.

By Bus – Several London buses stop nearby, including routes 11, 137, 211, 360, and 452. It’s a convenient option if you’re staying in central or west London.

One of the things I enjoy most about Hampton Court is the sense of space. Unlike Chelsea, there is room to wander, linger by the river and explore at your own pace. Combined with the palace, gardens and famous maze, it makes an excellent day trip from London for anyone who enjoys beautiful gardens, history and a slower style of travel.

RHS Garden Wisley

If Chelsea is Britain’s most famous flower show, RHS Wisley is where many keen gardeners go for inspiration. Located in Surrey, around an hour from central London, Wisley is the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society and one of the finest gardens in the country.

Unlike the larger festival atmosphere of Chelsea or Hampton Court, Wisley offers a more relaxed experience. The gardens themselves are the main attraction, with seasonal flower shows, specialist plant fairs and horticultural events taking place throughout the year.

If your main interest is gardens rather than flower shows, Wisley is often the better choice. The gardens themselves are the attraction and can easily fill an entire day.

Kew Gardens Throughout the Year

While not technically a flower show, Kew Gardens is one of the finest garden experiences in Britain and a place I return to regularly. Spread across more than 300 acres beside the Thames in southwest London, Kew combines historic glasshouses, world-class plant collections and seasonal displays that change throughout the year.

Whether you’re visiting during spring blossom season, summer rose displays, autumn colour or the famous Christmas lights, there is always something new to discover.

For visitors who only have time for one major garden during a London trip, Kew Gardens would be high on my recommendation list.

Kew Gardens is located in southwest London and is easy to reach using public transport.

By Tube – Kew Gardens Station on the District Line is around a 5-minute walk from Victoria Gate.

By Overground – London Overground services also stop at Kew Gardens Station.

By River – During warmer months, some visitors combine Kew with a Thames river cruise from Westminster or Richmond.
