Where to Find the Best Christmas Markets in London This Year

Christmas is my favourite season in London. The lights come on by mid-afternoon, the air turns crisp, and the smell of roasted chestnuts drifts along the river. Some say London can’t compete with the grand German markets. I disagree. Ours are smaller and more varied, and each has its own personality: a riverside promenade with Tower Bridge lit up beside you, a Victorian arcade, a historic market in my own corner of Greenwich. In this guide I share my favourite London Christmas markets for 2026, the quieter gems I return to every year, and the famous one I’d honestly skip. My advice after many Decembers here? Don’t try to see them all. Choose two or three, take your time, and enjoy them with something warm in hand.

How to enjoy London’s Christmas markets at a slower pace

• Come between late November and the first week of December. The lights are up and the markets are open, but the big December crowds haven’t arrived yet.
• Pick two or three markets, not seven. Every year I hear from visitors who tried to tick off every market and ended up tired rather than festive.
• Go on a weekday afternoon. Arrive around 3:30pm, browse in daylight, and stay as the lights come on just after 4pm.

🎠 The Big Five – London’s Iconic Christmas Markets

If it’s your first festive season in London, these are the unmissable ones. They bring together everything that makes this city sparkle in December — the lights, the laughter, and that unmistakable London energy. From riverside strolls to royal parks, here’s where to see them at their festive best.

1. Southbank Centre Winter Market

📅 2 November 2026 – 3 January 2027
🚇 Nearest Station: Waterloo

Stretching along the Queen’s Walk by the Thames, the Southbank Centre Winter Market delivers all the festive feels with iconic London views. Wooden stalls line the riverside selling artisan chocolates, handmade decorations, and woollen scarves — each stall different enough to make browsing a delight. The air smells of cinnamon, roasted nuts, and mulled wine.

⭐ Don’t Miss: This is where I come for presents. The stalls lean towards arts and crafts — handmade jewellery, prints, ceramics and small-batch treats — rather than the identical gifts you see at every market. Linger by the river and you’ll often catch a choir or brass band playing carols.

🧡 Insider Tip: Visit around 4 p.m. for that golden-hour glow on the Thames, then stay as the fairy lights switch on. It’s one of the most photogenic spots in London.

2. Winter by the River, London Bridge City

If I could visit only one market in December, it would be this one. The chalets line the riverside path between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, so you browse with HMS Belfast moored beside you and the Tower of London glowing across the water. For me, the food is the real draw: stalls from all over the world, well beyond the usual bratwurst, alongside pretty Christmas decorations worth carrying home.

⭐ Don’t Miss: Walking the full stretch at dusk, just as Tower Bridge lights up. It’s one of the most magnificent views in London, and it costs nothing.

🍷 Eat & Drink: Borough Market is a five-minute walk away and is my favourite place in London to eat in December — cheeses, hot food, and mulled wine to sip as you wander.

🧡 Insider Tip: Start at London Bridge, browse your way east, then cross Tower Bridge on foot to finish at the Tower of London. It’s an easy, flat walk with the river beside you the whole way.

3. Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

📅 15 November 2026 – 5 January 2027 (closed Christmas Day)

Few places feel more “London at Christmas” than Trafalgar Square. The towering Norwegian spruce — a gift from Oslo since 1947 — stands proudly beside Nelson’s Column, its lights shimmering against the National Gallery backdrop. Beneath it, the market brings together wooden chalets offering artisan candles, glass baubles, and gourmet treats like fudge and roasted almonds.

⭐ Don’t Miss: The tree lighting ceremony on Thursday 3 December, then the live carols sung by London choirs every evening; each evening a different group performs. There’s also a small drinks hut serving warm mulled wine and spicy punch, the perfect accompaniment while admiring the tree.

🧡 Insider Tip: Come for the carols. A different choir sings beneath the tree each evening, and standing there with a cup of mulled wine is London at Christmas at its best. You’re also steps from the National Gallery, a short stroll from Soho and Chinatown for dinner, and within easy walking distance of the city’s finest Christmas lights on Regent Street, Piccadilly, Bond Street and around Covent Garden.

4. Covent Garden Christmas Market

Elegant, glittering, and effortlessly London — Covent Garden Market turns its historic piazza into a showstopper each Christmas. Giant gold bells and oversized baubles hang beneath the Market Building’s glass roof, while a 55-foot tree lights up the Piazza. Every corner sparkles: street performers juggle beside a massive tree, and boutique stalls tempt with cashmere scarves, hand-poured candles, and local jewellery.

⭐ Don’t Miss: The Apple Market inside the central arcade, where London’s independent designers showcase their work. For a festive dinner, book Clos Maggiore, often called London’s most romantic restaurant, or the grand Parisian-style brasserie Balthazar. Then head up to the top-floor terrace at the Royal Opera House for a cocktail. It’s a hidden gem most visitors walk straight past, with views across the Piazza rooftops. Early evenings bring live music that fills the square.

5. Greenwich Christmas Market

My own local market — I’ve lived in Greenwich for over 35 years, and I still go every December. Set in a World Heritage Site, Greenwich Christmas Market combines maritime history, creativity, and community spirit. The market fills the covered arcade with artisan crafts, sustainable gifts, and hand-poured soaps — each stall run by small local makers. The atmosphere feels personal and authentic, especially as twinkling lights reflect off the cobbled lanes.

⭐ Don’t Miss: The annual Lantern Parade on Wednesday 18 November. At 4pm, local schoolchildren carry handmade lanterns from the Old Royal Naval College past the Cutty Sark, and at 5pm the crowd counts down to the market’s Christmas lights. Browse the market for hand-stitched stockings or stop by the food stalls for fresh churros and local gin from Greenwich Distillery.

🍷 Eat & Drink: Greenwich is where I come for mulled wine. The historic pubs and cafés around the market each pour their own version, so it’s worth trying more than one. Between drinks, wander the little shops around the market — craft makers, unusual clothing and shoes you won’t find on any high street. The whole place has a warm, easy vibe that I never tire of.

🧡 Insider Tip: Cutty Sark DLR station has reopened after its refurbishment, now with new escalators and a lift, so it’s the easiest way in. For a more scenic arrival, take the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers and step off right by the market. Visit on a Saturday when the Greenwich Vintage Market also runs for extra shopping options. Afterwards, enjoy a pint at The Trafalgar Tavern overlooking the Thames — our favourite spot for sunset photos.

6. The Famous One I’d Skip: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

London’s festive juggernaut — and for good reason. Winter Wonderland is more than a market; it’s an entire Christmas theme park in the heart of the city. Think giant Ferris wheel, glittering ice rink, and a Bavarian Village where live bands play oompah classics late into the night. Rows of alpine-style chalets overflow with handmade ornaments, woollen hats, and every type of festive snack imaginable.

⭐ My Honest Take: I went once, for the experience, and once was enough. It’s enormous, the crowds are exhausting, and the costs add up fast: you need a ticket just to get in, every ride and show is extra, and the food is mostly burgers and chips at festival prices. Families tell me the same every year — a day out with children can cost far more than they expected.

🧡 If You Do Go: Pick a November weekday afternoon, when entry is cheapest (from £1) and the crowds are thinner. See the Christmas market and the 70-metre Giant Wheel at dusk, then leave before the evening rush. Book any rides or shows online in advance. 💎 Hidden Gems Londoners Love

If the crowds at Winter Wonderland make you nervous, or you prefer discovering tucked-away treasures, this next list is for you. London’s smaller and local markets offer charm in abundance — fewer queues, friendlier vendors, and a chance to see a more authentic side of the city. These are the ones we go back to every year.

1. Old Spitalfields Christmas Market – East London Cool Meets Festive Chic

📅 11 November – 24 December 2026 (lights switch on 11 November)
🚇 Nearest Station: Liverpool Street

There’s something special about Old Spitalfields Market at Christmas. It’s historic yet trendy, covered (so you’re safe from the drizzle), and buzzing with independent energy. The regular weekday traders transform their stalls into mini winter boutiques selling hand-crafted jewellery, candles, fashion, and quirky art pieces.

⭐ What Makes It Special: You won’t find mass-produced trinkets here. Everything feels unique — think locally designed scarves, hand-painted ceramics, and vintage Christmas decorations. On Thursdays and weekends, the Urban Makers collective takes over, showcasing sustainable gifts made right here in London.

🍷 Eat & Drink: Treat yourself to a hot mulled wine from The Loft bar upstairs or grab a gourmet cheese toastie from Morty & Bob’s. If you’re hungry for more, the surrounding area offers some of East London’s best food spots — Wright Brothers Oyster House for seafood, Yum Bun for bao, or Blixen for cocktails.

2. Leadenhall Market at Christmas – Victorian Elegance in the City

It’s less a full-time Christmas market and more a festive setting: a 26-foot Christmas tree beneath the glass roof, a twinkling light tunnel, and two Christmas craft fairs filled with independent makers.

⭐ What Makes It Special: The setting is extraordinary. The intricate ironwork ceiling, decked in twinkling lights, has starred in several films. It’s one of London’s most beautiful architectural spaces. During the festive season, the atmosphere is enchanting yet unhurried — a welcome break from Oxford Street’s chaos. Look out, too, for No. 27¼ — a row of tiny shops called the Wunderkammer, open on Thursday afternoons until 22 December.

🕯️ Eat & Drink: Order a glass of fizz at The Lamb Tavern (a City institution), or cosy up at Leadenhall Wine Bar. For foodies, nearby Bob Bob Ricard City offers decadent dining with “Press for Champagne” buttons.

🧡 Insider Tip: Come on a Saturday morning, when the City workers are gone and you’ll practically have the arcade to yourself. Pop into nearby St Dunstan-in-the-East, a bombed-out church turned secret garden, for a peaceful winter photo stop.

3. Chelsea Physic Garden Christmas Fair – Elegant, Artisanal & Quintessentially British

Nestled behind high brick walls beside the Thames, Chelsea Physic Garden feels like a world apart from the bustle of central London. Each winter, this botanical haven hosts a beautiful Christmas Fair with over 100 hand-picked artisans. It’s a curated affair — refined, tranquil, and ideal for thoughtful gift shopping.

⭐ What Makes It Special: You’ll find luxury homeware, botanical skincare, handwoven textiles, and exquisite edible treats. Think British craftsmanship at its best. The setting — an historic 17th-century garden dotted with twinkling lights — makes this market as peaceful as it is pretty.

🍫 Eat & Drink: Enjoy a glass of prosecco at the Garden Café or warm up with spiced apple juice as you browse. Many stalls offer complimentary tastings, so come hungry.

🧡 Insider Tip: Book your entry tickets in advance — it’s a popular event. Thursday and Friday are quieter than the weekend, and the morning light makes the garden glow.
